The weekly Executive Briefing: insights, books, tools, and media opportunities worth your attention — curated and distilled into 5 minutes.
Someone you respect has told you a Tony Robbins book changed their year, and you want to know which one, because you have one long flight to give it. Start with Awaken the Giant Within if the problem is drive, and Money Master the Game if the problem is money. Of the Tony Robbins books, those two carry the rest.
Our newsroom read the publisher’s page for every book he has written and recorded the year, the page count and the co-author. Then we read 11 published rankings of his books and recorded which title each put first. Every row below links to the page we read, checked on 6 November 2026.
What We Found
Of 11 published rankings of Tony Robbins books our newsroom checked, eight put Awaken the Giant Within first, two put Unlimited Power first, and only one, a Goodreads reader shelf, puts Money Master the Game first.
Five editorial lists, Goodreads sorted by popularity, ThriftBooks’ most popular list and an aggregator of other lists all land on the 1991 book. The two that choose Unlimited Power are small blogs, and the one that chooses Money Master the Game is a reader shelf with 16 shelvings behind its top entry.
Money Master the Game appears on all 14 lists we read, the 11 rankings, two chronological catalogues and one guide that declines to rank. Awaken the Giant Within appears on 13; the fourteenth lists the 2013 edition, Re-Awaken the Giant Within, in its place. The two books are mentioned almost equally; the rankings prefer one of them eight to one.
The book list gave a second number. His eight books run to 3,552 pages in the publisher editions we checked, and every one published since 2017 carries a co-author. Nineteen years separate Notes from a Friend, from 1995, and Money Master the Game, from 2014.
Which Tony Robbins Book Should You Read First?
Read Awaken the Giant Within first if you want the core of his method on emotions, beliefs and habits. Read Money Master the Game first if you want the seven-step personal finance plan and the investor interviews. Eight of the 11 rankings we checked choose Awaken; the money books assume you already want to invest.
That is the answer to the question readers keep typing into Reddit and into Google, which of his books to read first. A manager with a flat team or a flat self gets more from the first book. A manager with a pension they have never looked at gets more from the second, and the first will feel like a detour.
Three of the rankings say so in plain words. Mind Is the Master calls Awaken the Giant Within “the book to start with if you want to explore Tony Robbins’s books”. Peter Boolkah writes that “for anyone new to Tony Robbins’s work, Awaken the Giant Within is the best book to begin with”. WallStreetMojo puts Awaken at number one and tells readers to “pick this Tony Robbins book first”, then calls Unlimited Power “the first book you should read” in the very next entry, which is the kind of hedge that sent us to count.
One page we read and left out of the count is the European licensee’s own guide, because it refuses to pick. Greator’s guide opens with a section headed “Which Tony Robbins book should you read first?” and answers it by mapping goals to books, its table starting with Money Master the Game and its chapters with Awaken, before closing with “It’s about picking the one that speaks to where you are right now.” That is right, and it can be said in fewer words. Pick the problem, drive or money, then the book.
Tony Robbins Books in Order, With Pages and Co-Authors
Here are the Tony Robbins books in order of first publication, with the page count from the publisher edition we read and the co-author where there is one. The audio programme Unleash the Power Within sits on three of the rankings and has its own Simon & Schuster Audio page, so it is included at the end, outside the page total.
| Book | First published | Co-author | Pages (edition checked) | Publisher page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unlimited Power | 1986 | None | 448 | Simon & Schuster |
| Awaken the Giant Within | 1991 | None | 544 | Simon & Schuster |
| Giant Steps | 1994 | None | 416 | Simon & Schuster |
| Notes from a Friend | 1995 | None | 112 | Simon & Schuster |
| Money Master the Game | 2014 | None | 688 | Simon & Schuster |
| Unshakeable | 2017 | Peter Mallouk | 256 | Simon & Schuster |
| Life Force | 2022 | Peter H. Diamandis, with Robert Hariri | 720 | Simon & Schuster |
| The Holy Grail of Investing | 2024 | Christopher Zook | 368 | Simon & Schuster |
| Unleash the Power Within (audio) | 2020 edition | None | 6 hours 15 minutes | Simon & Schuster Audio |
Two notes on the numbers. The publisher pages for the older books show later edition dates, so the first-publication year comes from the copyright line on the same page, or from Open Library and Goodreads where the publisher page gave only the edition. And the 1997 title Unlimited Power: A Black Choice, written with Joseph McClendon III, is missing because its publisher page would not load for us; it is on two of the rankings and nowhere in our totals.
What 11 Published Rankings Put First
The second table is the dataset behind the headline: the first book on each list, the basis of the ordering, and whether the list mentions each front-runner. The last three rows are shown for completeness and sit outside the count.

The Goodreads numbers explain part of the pattern. On its author page, Awaken the Giant Within has 77,266 ratings at an average of 4.15, Unlimited Power 37,757 at 4.22, and Money Master the Game 27,274 at 4.01. The older book has nearly three times the ratings of the money book, so any list sorted by readers will put Awaken first. Unlimited Power has the highest average of the three, which is the case the two dissenting blogs make.

What Is Awaken the Giant Within About?
Awaken the Giant Within is Robbins’s 1991 book on taking control of your own state. The publisher describes it as a step-by-step programme for “mastering your emotions, your body, your relationships, your finances, and your life”. It is his second book, and it runs to 544 pages in the current edition.
The title is the pitch. The full subtitle on the Goodreads listing runs to “How to Take Immediate Control of Your Mental, Emotional, Physical and Financial Destiny!”, exclamation mark included, and the publisher’s 1991 audio edition promises the same command of emotions, body, relationships and money. That is the register of the whole book: large claims, delivered with confidence, and a step-by-step programme underneath them.
The useful part for a working manager is the material on beliefs. The European licensee’s own guide says the book “teaches you how to take command of your emotions, beliefs, and habits” and promises to show “how to reprogram limiting beliefs in real time”. Strip the sales language and the claim is that a belief is a decision you have stopped noticing. If the belief in question is that you were promoted by mistake, our report on how to overcome imposter syndrome shows what nine leaders on record did about the same feeling, which is the sharper companion.
The weakness is length. One of the rankings, eReads, heads its Giant Steps entry “Why You Should Read This Book First?”, and the publisher sells Giant Steps as the companion to this one. Read the chapters on beliefs, skim the rest, and spend the saved hours on the behaviours the book is trying to change. Our study of leadership behaviors is a list of those behaviours as other people see them, which is the test Robbins never quite sets.
What Is Money Master the Game About?
Money Master the Game is Robbins’s 2014 personal finance book, 688 pages built around a seven-step plan and interviews with investors including John Bogle, Warren Buffett, Paul Tudor Jones, Ray Dalio and Carl Icahn. Its publisher’s page describes a plan for saving, investing and building a lifetime income.
The seven sections follow a sensible order: the first financial decision, the rules of investing, setting financial goals, asset allocation, creating lifetime income, learning from the top investors, and putting the plan into action. The publisher quotes Forbes calling it the book that would win “if there were a Pulitzer Prize for investment books”, and The New York Times calling it a “distillation of just about every good personal finance idea of the last forty years”. The second quote is the fairer one. The service is that it is all in one place.
The chapters on fees are the ones we would make compulsory. A reader who finishes them will see why our explainer on what is an expense ratio matters more than any stock tip, and will go and check their own fund’s number the same afternoon. The chapters on retirement income pair with our count of 401k match policies at 17 large employers, where the median match was 5% of pay. Robbins tells you to take the match; we tell you what the match is.
The interviews are the other reason to read it, and the reason to keep going afterwards. Dalio is one of the investors interviewed, and the fuller version of his thinking is the subject of our Ray Dalio Principles summary. Buffett is another, and his own letters are where our guide to Warren Buffett books sends readers next.
Is Unlimited Power Worth Reading First?
Unlimited Power is the 1986 debut and the choice of two of the 11 rankings. Read it first only if you want the raw version of the method. The publisher’s page calls it “the new science of personal achievement” and promises “how to duplicate the success of others”. It holds the higher Goodreads average, 4.22, on half the ratings.
The core idea is one word. The excerpt names it: “modeling, a way to reproduce precisely the excellence of others”. Find someone who already does the thing well, study exactly how, and copy it. Forty years on that reads as plain apprenticeship, and a 1986 book carries 1986 examples. Awaken the Giant Within came five years later with the material on beliefs and habits, which is the likeliest reason the majority of rankings skip the debut.
Modelling a person is Robbins’s version. Modelling a company starts with what it sells and to whom, which is the ground our explainer on what is a business model covers.
Flex Your Brain, one of the two dissenters, calls it “a solid choice for your first or last personal development book”. That is fair.
The Money Trilogy: Unshakeable and The Holy Grail of Investing
Unshakeable, from 2017, is the first of the books with a co-author and the shortest of the money books at 256 pages. Written with Peter Mallouk, whom the publisher’s page describes as chosen by Barron’s as the number one independent financial adviser in America for three straight years, it promises to “uncover the hidden fees and half truths of Wall Street” and to show “how the biggest firms keep you overpaying for underperformance”. Greator’s guide calls it an “action-focused follow-up” to Money Master the Game that teaches “how to stay calm while others panic”. Read that as the fee argument, shorter, with a section on what to do in a crash.
If 688 pages is the reason you have never read the money book, Unshakeable is the alternative, and a manager can finish it on the flight we started with. It appears on 12 of the 14 lists we read, more than any book other than Money Master the Game. Surprise Castle’s ranking says Money Master the Game is “worth reading before the other two money books, which assume you know its plan”. We agree on the sequence and disagree on the necessity. The fee chapters of either will do.
The Holy Grail of Investing, from February 2024, is the third and final book in what the launch press release, issued in Robbins’s own name, calls his financial freedom trilogy, written with Christopher Zook and running to 368 pages. The release says it “discloses the immense power alternative investments and private markets have on wealth building”, draws on “more than a dozen of the world’s most successful investors”, and debuted at number one on Amazon’s bestseller list. It is a book for someone who has read the first two and has capital that qualifies for the funds it describes.

Life Force, Giant Steps and Notes from a Friend
Life Force, from 2022, is the longest of the Tony Robbins books at 720 pages and the furthest from his method. Written with Peter H. Diamandis and Robert Hariri, it surveys precision medicine. It never appears in first place on any of the rankings we read; the only list that opens with it is a catalogue sorted newest first. Medical claims date faster than motivational ones.
Giant Steps, from 1994, is 416 pages that the publisher calls “a companion to Tony Robbins’s landmark book Awaken the Giant Within”, offering “daily inspirations and small actions”. Notes from a Friend, from 1995, is 112 pages that began as a self-published edition in 1991; the publisher’s page says that version “has been handed out to thousands of people in need” through the Tony Robbins Foundation’s Thanksgiving Basket Brigade. Neither is a first book.
If the hard patch is yours, check the practical protections before the motivational book. Our guides to stress leave from work and to burnout mindfulness cover what protection you have and what the evidence says works, and a reader who is simply exhausted will get more from either than from a chapter telling them to change their state.

Which One We Would Hand to a Manager
Money Master the Game, with a bookmark in the fee chapters and permission to skip the first hundred pages.
In our experience the managers who ask for a Tony Robbins recommendation rarely have a motivation problem. They have a decision they are avoiding, and a pension, a fund or a bonus they have never examined. The money book meets that problem with numbers, and the numbers survive contact with a sceptic. The motivation book meets it with a method that depends on the reader’s willingness to be talked to, and that fades by chapter six for most of the managers we know.
Hand the manager Awaken the Giant Within instead when the drive is genuinely gone and the job is still worth doing. Even then, check first whether the drive went because of fatigue rather than belief. A tired person given a motivation book tends to feel worse, because the book implies the problem was attitude. The pieces linked above on burnout and stress leave are the earlier conversation.
For a founder rather than a manager, the comparison that helps is with the other operator reading lists we have built. Our guide to Alex Hormozi books answers the same “which first” question for an author whose whole catalogue is about selling. Robbins’s catalogue splits in two.
How We Did This
On 6 November 2026 we read the publisher’s page for each of the eight Tony Robbins books Simon & Schuster publishes, plus the Unleash the Power Within audio programme, and recorded the first-publication year, page count, format and co-author; where the publisher page showed only a later edition, the first-publication year came from the copyright line on that page, Open Library or Goodreads, each fetched. We then read 14 published lists of his books, chosen from the first pages of a Google search for the keyword and for “best Tony Robbins books”, and recorded the book each placed first, the basis of the ordering and whether it mentioned Money Master the Game and Awaken the Giant Within. Two lists ordered by publication date, and one guide that maps goals to books without placing any first, are shown but excluded from the count of 11 rankings. Lists of books Robbins recommends by other authors were excluded. Pages that would not load were dropped: the BFC Publications list, two Reddit threads, and the publisher page for Unlimited Power: A Black Choice. The full dataset, with the supporting quote and source for every row, is available on request.
Frequently Asked Questions
What order should I read the Tony Robbins books in?
By problem, then by date. For drive and decisions: Awaken the Giant Within, then Giant Steps as the daily version, then Unlimited Power if you want the origin. For money: Money Master the Game, then Unshakeable, then The Holy Grail of Investing only if private funds are open to you. Life Force stands alone.
How many books has Tony Robbins written?
Eight books in print with Simon & Schuster, from Unlimited Power in 1986 to The Holy Grail of Investing in 2024, three of them with co-authors, plus audio programmes such as Unleash the Power Within. The 2024 press release for the latest book describes him as the author of seven internationally bestselling books.
Is Money Master the Game or Awaken the Giant Within better?
They answer different questions. Eight of the 11 rankings we checked place Awaken the Giant Within first, and it has nearly three times as many Goodreads ratings. Money Master the Game is the more useful book for anyone with savings they have not examined, because its argument about fees can be checked against your own statements the same day.
Buy Awaken the Giant Within for drive and Money Master the Game for money, and whichever you choose, read the fee chapters of the second before the year is out.
