The weekly Executive Briefing: insights, books, tools, and media opportunities worth your attention — curated and distilled into 5 minutes.
You have a job, a mortgage and a promotion that keeps going to the candidate with the degree. The online universities for working adults worth your money share three things: accreditation recognised in the US, a price you can check before you apply, and a format that fits around a full working week. WGU, SNHU, ASU Online, Purdue Global and Penn State World Campus all meet that bar.
We are not admissions advisers. Every figure below comes from the university’s own website or a government source, checked on 29 October 2026, and each one is linked so you can check it again.
What Employers Actually Count
At the large universities, the diploma usually looks the same either way. ASU’s FAQ says your diploma and transcript will say “Arizona State University”. Penn State says there is nothing on its certificate to indicate whether courses were taken online or on campus.
What an employer can check is accreditation. The US Department of Education recognises the agencies that accredit colleges and offers a database of accredited postsecondary institutions and programs. It also warns about diploma mills, which it describes as schools “more interested in taking your money than providing you with a quality education”.
Accreditation also shapes whether your employer will pay. SNHU’s explainer on tuition reimbursement notes that some employers ask you to choose a college and program from a list they provide. A school that fails the accreditation check will rarely make that list.
The brand, the rankings and the advertising come after that. A degree finished while working full time also tells a hiring manager something about stamina that no line on a CV can.
Penn State World Campus opened in 1998, according to its own history page, and says its online courses are the same courses it offers on campus. That is 28 years of online graduates carrying the same university name.
That gives the test this guide applies to online universities for working adults: an accreditor the government recognises, a published price, and a format built for people with a day job.
How to Check Accreditation in Five Minutes
Use two free databases. CHEA’s database lists over 8,200 institutions and over 44,000 programs accredited by recognised US accrediting organisations. Type in the university’s name, or click an accreditor to see the schools it covers. The Department of Education’s search tool, linked from its accreditation page, shows what accrediting and state agencies have reported to it.
Then compare the accreditor named on the university’s own site with the one in the database. WGU names the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. SNHU names the New England Commission of Higher Education. ASU and Purdue Global both name the Higher Learning Commission. Penn State names the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
If the name on the school’s site and the name in the database do not match, stop there and ask the school why.
The same check is your defence against a diploma mill. A mill can name an accreditor with an official-sounding title, so look the accreditor up as well as the school. An accreditor missing from the CHEA database is one CHEA does not list as recognised, whatever its website says.
Any school that cannot tell you in one sentence who accredits it, and where you can verify that, has given you its answer.
Some programs also carry their own accreditation, which is common in fields such as business and nursing. If you are weighing a business degree at the senior end, our piece on whether an executive MBA is worth it covers when the program’s own badge matters more than the university’s.

The Five Universities Side by Side
The table uses each university’s own published figures. Read the units carefully before comparing, because they are not all priced the same way.
| University | Accreditor | Published tuition | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| WGU | Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities | Flat rate per six-month term. Average about $8,300 a year for a bachelor’s, $8,856 for a master’s | Online, competency-based, courses finished as fast as you master them |
| SNHU | New England Commission of Higher Education | $354 per undergraduate credit, $659 per graduate credit (2026-27) | Online, private nonprofit, over 200,000 online students |
| ASU Online | Higher Learning Commission | $580 per credit hour, Fall 2026 Arizona resident undergraduate, plus college fees | Six start dates a year; diploma reads Arizona State University |
| Purdue Global | Higher Learning Commission | $371 per quarter credit undergraduate, $420 for standard master’s programs | Ten-week terms; three-week trial for new undergraduates |
| Penn State World Campus | Middle States Commission on Higher Education | $644 to $692 per undergraduate credit (2026-27, 11 or fewer credits a semester) | More than 200 programs; the same courses offered on campus |
Purdue Global charges per quarter credit, which its catalogue defines as three hours a week for ten weeks. WGU charges per term, however many courses you finish. Penn State’s rate rises once you have completed 60 credits. So ask each school for the total cost of the whole degree, fees included, with your transfer credits applied.
What It Costs, and How to Pay Less
WGU’s tuition page is blunt about its model: “whether you complete 8 courses in a term or 20, your tuition won’t change.” WGU describes itself as a nonprofit. A manager who already knows much of the material can move fast and cut the bill hard. Someone who needs every module taught from scratch gets less from the format.
Graduate study is priced differently again. SNHU charges $659 per graduate credit. Purdue Global charges $420 per quarter credit for standard master’s programs and $485 for its MBA, MS in Finance and several other business programs. WGU puts its average master’s tuition at about $8,856 a year.
SNHU is the simpler sum. At $354 per undergraduate credit for 2026-27, a three-credit course costs $1,062 before any fees. SNHU describes itself as a private, nonprofit institution with over 200,000 online students.
ASU’s headline rate needs reading closely. Its Fall 2026 fee schedule sets resident online tuition at $580 per credit hour, with college fees of $22 to $140 per credit hour on top, depending on the program. Seven credit hours come to between $4,392 and $5,218 with fees.
Purdue Global publishes lower rates for servicemembers ($165 per quarter credit), veterans ($230) and Indiana residents ($280). Its tuition page describes a three-week introductory period for new undergraduates with no financial obligation, and those who continue are billed for the full first term, trial included. It calls itself a public, nonprofit institution.
Penn State World Campus has the highest per-credit price in this group, at $644 to $692 for 2026-27 undergraduates taking 11 or fewer credits. You are paying for the Penn State name on a diploma that, by Penn State’s own account, does not show online study.
Employer Tuition Assistance and the $5,250 Limit
Before you pay anything, ask HR what the company will fund. SNHU’s guide cites a Society for Human Resource Management survey finding that 45% of employers offered an undergraduate or graduate tuition program in 2025.
Under Section 127, the IRS lets an employer give you up to $5,250 a year in educational assistance tax free. The plan must be written, so ask HR whether one exists. The courses do not have to be work-related. Unused amounts cannot be carried forward, and the limit will be adjusted for the cost of living for tax years beginning after 2026.
Read the policy for the strings attached. SNHU’s guide notes that some employers pay only once you complete the course or earn a set grade. Ask, too, what happens if you leave the company soon after finishing.
Get the approval in writing before the term starts, with the course, the cost and the amount the company will cover. A manager’s verbal yes in September is easy to forget by the time the invoice arrives in December.
Tuition support is part of pay, and you can negotiate it like the rest. Our guide to the compensation package covers how to raise it in an offer conversation.
Tax-free tuition money also protects your other goals. If you would otherwise cut retirement contributions to pay fees, our guides to 403b vs 401k and the Roth IRA 5 year rule cover the accounts you would be underfunding.
Self-employed readers have no HR department to ask. The education budget comes out of the business, and our piece on llc vs s corp covers how owners set that business up.

How Many Hours a Week It Really Takes
Purdue Global’s definition of a credit is the clearest number in this guide. One quarter credit is one hour of documented class activity plus two hours outside it, three hours a week for ten weeks. On that definition, a five-credit course is 15 hours a week.
Fifteen hours is two weekday evenings of three hours each and most of a Saturday. Ask the admissions team for a sample week on your program, including when the heaviest assessments fall. Then find those hours in your current week before you enrol. Decide in advance what gives: television, a weekend sport, a side project.
Protect sleep first. Our guides on how to get more deep sleep and caffeine and anxiety are worth reading before the first exam week, when the temptation is a fourth coffee at ten at night.
Start dates matter too. ASU says each semester is split into two sessions, which gives six dates a year to begin, so a busy quarter at work need not cost you a whole year.
Pick the format that matches how your weeks actually run. WGU’s self-paced terms suit people whose workload swings from month to month. Fixed terms, like Purdue Global’s ten weeks or ASU’s six start dates a year, suit people who need a deadline to move.
Break the degree into pieces you can finish. Set it up as a run of short term career goals: one course, one term, one grade. Our piece on concrete thinking explains why “finish Statistics by March” gets done when “get a degree” drifts.
The family feels the extra hours as much as you do. Our look at the countries with best work life balance is a reminder of how much of the week the job already takes before any study starts.
Choosing Among Online Universities for Working Adults
Most online universities for working adults will look similar on a brochure. Start with the job you want next, then work back. If your employer funds tuition only at listed schools, the list decides for you.
If the name on the diploma matters in your field, ASU and Penn State put the same university name on it as their campus degrees. If cost and speed matter more and you already know much of the material, WGU’s flat term rewards pace. If you want frequent start dates and a published per-credit price, SNHU and Purdue Global make the sum easy.
A full degree may also be more than the promotion needs. If the gap is one skill, a shorter certificate may close it sooner, and our guide to what is upskilling covers the options short of four years of study.
If you are aiming at one of the big 4 consulting firms, ask their recruiters which qualifications they screen for before you choose a program. The interview the degree was meant to win brings its own smaller decisions, down to what to wear, and our guide to the smart casual dress code for men covers that one.
When two schools come out close, score them on accreditation, total cost, format and employer funding with our decision making matrix. The one with the highest score is usually the one that fits the week you already have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do employers accept online degrees?
Accreditation is the check that counts, and at ASU and Penn State the diploma does not mention online study. Look the school up in the CHEA or Department of Education database before you apply, and confirm it appears on your employer’s approved list if there is one.
What is the cheapest of the online universities for working adults?
On published rates, WGU can be the cheapest if you move fast, at an average of about $8,300 a year for a bachelor’s. SNHU’s $354 per undergraduate credit is the lowest per-credit figure among the five, though Purdue Global’s $371 is per quarter credit. Your total depends on transfer credits and pace.
How many hours a week does an online degree take?
Purdue Global defines one quarter credit as three hours a week for ten weeks. Multiply that by the credits you take at once, and plan your evenings and weekends around the result before you enrol.
Choose the accredited school whose format fits the week you already work, get your employer to pay what it can, and finish the first course before you plan the next four.
