"Our central focus is student success—from access and equity to completion, transfer, and workforce readiness."

Could you give us an introduction to SOCCCD?

The South Orange County Community College District (SOCCCD) continues to build on a strong foundation of student success, innovation, and community partnership. Through intentional governance, long-term vision, and a deep commitment to serving diverse learners, the District has made meaningful progress across its colleges and programs. In the following conversation, Chancellor Dr. Julianna M. Asperin Barnes, members of the Board of Trustees, and Student Trustee Blake Leonard share their perspectives on the key factors driving SOCCCD’s success, the District’s priorities, and the initiatives shaping its future.

What do you see as the key factors behind SOCCCD’s success?

Carolyn Inmon, President, Board of Trustees: Strong governance is at the heart of SOCCCD’s success. The Board works closely with the Chancellor and college leadership to ensure accountability, fiscal stewardship, and policies that keep students at the center of every decision we make.”

Marcia Milchiker, Trustee: SOCCCD’s strength lies in its consistency and culture of collaboration. By continuously investing in people, facilities, and innovation, the District has maintained stability while evolving to meet the needs of its students and communities.

Can you describe SOCCCD’s main focus and the key programs or services it offers?

Dr. Julianna M. Asperin Barnes, Chancellor: Our central focus is student success—from access and equity to completion, transfer, and workforce readiness. Through Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College, we offer high-quality academic pathways, career education, lifelong learning, and comprehensive student support services designed to help students achieve their goals.

T.J. Prendergast, Clerk, Board of Trustees: SOCCCD is committed to providing clear and supported pathways. Whether students are planning to transfer, earn a credential, or develop job-ready skills, the District emphasizes access, guidance, and equity every step of the way.

How does SOCCCD distinguish itself within California’s community college system?

Ryan Dack, Vice President, Board of Trustees: What sets SOCCCD apart is its thoughtful balance of innovation and responsibility. The District relies on data-driven decision-making while remaining responsive to the evolving needs of students and the regional workforce.

Lisa Bartlett, Trustee: The District distinguishes itself through strong community and industry partnerships. These relationships ensure our programs remain relevant and aligned with real-world opportunities for students.

Are there any recent achievements, new programs, or upcoming initiatives at SOCCCD that you’re particularly excited to share?

Tim Jemal, Trustee: I’m especially excited about the District’s expansion of the Advanced Technology & Education Park (ATEP), which is being driven by strong public-private partnerships and close collaboration with industry. These workforce-aligned initiatives create hands-on learning opportunities for students, strengthen regional economic development, and ensure our programs are directly connected to the skills employers need now and in the future.

Terri Rydell, Trustee: SOCCCD’s ongoing investments in modernized facilities, student services, and emerging technologies reflect a commitment to meeting students’ needs today while preparing for the future.

How does SOCCCD connect with and support its students, community partners, and other stakeholders?

Blake Leonard, Student Trustee: As a student, I’ve seen how meaningful it is when student voices are truly heard. SOCCCD actively includes students in conversations and decisions, which strengthens trust and improves the student experience.

Dr. Julianna M. Asperin Barnes, Chancellor: We view SOCCCD as a connector—bringing together students, educators, employers, and community partners. Through collaboration and shared responsibility, we build pathways that strengthen both individual opportunity and our wider community.

What’s your key message for our readers?

As these voices reflect, SOCCCD’s strength lies in collaboration—between the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, college leadership, students, and community partners. Together, they continue to advance educational opportunities that support transfer, workforce readiness, and lifelong learning while responding to the evolving needs of the region. With a clear focus on students and an eye toward the future, SOCCCD remains committed to creating pathways that empower individuals, strengthen communities, and shape a more equitable and prosperous tomorrow.
