"Rather than working at scale, we focus on one-on-one attention and highly tailored service, enabling us to deliver a more meaningful and seamless experience."

What are the main factors behind Ker & Downey Africa’s success?

Ker & Downey Africa has stayed true to our boutique, personal approach. We’re intentionally selective about the clients we take on, choosing to work with people who align with our brand and travel style. Rather than working at scale, we focus on one-on-one attention and highly tailored service, enabling us to deliver a more meaningful and seamless experience.

Can you describe Ker & Downey Africa’s core business and the main experiences or services you offer?

We specialize in high-end safari travel and partner with lodges that share our values of conservation, community, and the protection of Africa’s natural resources. Our core focus is the five-star market, but we also curate options that deliver a five-star experience with a more adventurous edge, so there’s something for different travel styles while still meeting our standards.

How competitive is the luxury safari and travel market, and what makes Ker & Downey Africa stand out?

The luxury safari market is becoming increasingly competitive, especially as travel becomes more accessible and more operators enter the space. What sets us apart is that we’re based on the continent, work closely with trusted in-country ground handlers, have our own sister companies located in specific regions, and provide hands-on support from start to finish.

We don’t aim to price-match, but we’re transparent and fair. We don’t inflate costs beyond what’s publicly available online; instead, we add value through our on-the-ground expertise, personalized planning, and the quality of service and support our clients receive throughout their journey.

What markets or regions is Ker & Downey Africa currently focusing on for growth?

Zambia and South Africa are seeing strong momentum again this year, and we’re leaning into that. Zambia is a newish destination, and I would like to see this area thrive. We also have an office in Tanzania, so a key focus is expanding our presence and growing our business there.

How does Ker & Downey Africa attract clients and business partners, and maintain strong relationships with them?

We attract new clients and partners primarily through our newsletters and social media, and we’ve recently launched a loyalty membership and referral program that we plan to develop.

Relationship-building is a big part of how we work. We also send thoughtful, personalized gifts, often artistic or locally sourced, that reflect Africa itself. The intention isn’t heavy branding; it’s to reconnect clients with their experience, the people, and the place they travelled through.
