Miriam School and Learning Center: Unlocking potential for neurodiverse learners

Personalized learning and integrated therapies create success stories for students with learning differences.

At Miriam School and Learning Center, the mission is clear: help children with special educational needs unlock their full potential. The K-12 educational institution draws on more than 60 years of experience in the field to provide a highly personalized learning environment that brings the best in every child.

“We aim to support children who are neurodiverse by giving them the tools and strategies they need to succeed both academically and in life,” says Head of School Meg Bamford. “We create programs that nurture the whole child, and this approach sets us apart.”

Using an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) for each student, Miriam offers a range of educational pathways. For example, at the high school level, students can receive remedial support, follow a standard high school curriculum and even receive college credit through partnerships with local colleges.

In addition to personalized academics, Miriam emphasizes integrated services. Speech and occupational therapies as well as counseling, often delivered outside of school elsewhere, are seamlessly woven into the student’s day. This approach helps them develop holistically, with everything from sensory “diets” or activities to personalized therapy schedules tailored to their needs.

Miriam’s innovation doesn’t stop there. The school encourages experiential learning, where students apply their classroom knowledge in real-world contexts through internships and volunteer work. Prepared for success beyond school, Miriam graduates are equipped with essential life skills like self-advocacy, wellness and executive functioning.

The school and outreach center welcomes donors and partners who will help it accommodate more neurodiverse learners and provide training for special educators. Additional funding will help Miriam broaden its impact on children with learning differences and the people who serve them. External support will also strengthen the school’s role as a learning center that reaches out to students who cannot attend Miriam and provides services and staffing to partner schools in the Greater St. Louis Area.

With a vision to expand its impact in the coming years, Miriam is dedicated to changing the narrative around neurodiverse students, proving that with the right support and specialized instruction, every child can thrive.

“It’s really helping our students, first and foremost, as well as the people around them to understand the gifts these kids have,” Bamford emphasizes. “We see children for who they are and nurture their strengths to help them overcome the challenges in their lives.”
